Looking Back
The MSU Stem program was refreshing and challenging, we were able to think outside the box but the instructors valued our past experience and we used that as a platform to build our learning. The first day was amazing it started off quickly, and so much information was given, but we collaborated and work as a team to reach our goal for the day. As an instructor I feel there is so little time to teach and there is so much information that must be covered before the end of the year. The MSUStem program was very rigorous but at the same time it was doable. We were able to accomplish so mush in such a small time frame. Every moment that was spent was intentional and impactful.
In the first day we were introduced with Today in History and then with the World of Wonder the instructors modeled this throughout the eleven days, as an icebreaker, but also to reel the students into the days lesson. We were also introduced to new technology like the Olloclip for cell phone that made something mundane as taking picture amazing. We later were broken in small group and completed a Shoot’n‘Tweet. In where we started our own twitter account. This one day is an example of what will occur throughout the next 10 days, at times it seemed overwhelming, but at the same time there was so much that I learned that I will be able to implement in my teaching practice.
There was always structure and an agenda that followed, if there was anything that you had a wondering, questions were answered and we all worked as a team to meet and achieve the goal of learning and bringing it back to the classroom. We know time was limited and collaboration and assisting one another way the key to move forward. There was a genuine respect of one another’s strength that began with our coaches and the community of fellowship continued throughout our class.
Looking Forward
I have already started planning my curriculum and know review the materials that were given by my school. I have planned some activities for the beginning of the year. For instance the World of wonder will start in small group and transform later to individual presentation. Tech tips becoming a bi-weekly event that we will use in math in our projects that we will be doing online. Creating power point that can showcase student work. Another item we will implement are the Quick-fire. This can be used an formative assessment or even as an informal assessment., depending on what is being assessed.
We will be using a variety of hand on activities to deepen our understanding in math. Thanks to Donors Choose I was granted 10 Chrome books that we will be using in the classroom. Video recording and view other helpful sites to deepen our understanding of math.
Creating Blogs and having a open chat room where students can share their struggle in a problem and other can chime in to help one another, in doing so this will also create a closer community in my classroom. The goal is for all of us to learn and help one another by exploring, explaining and being empathetic to the needs of others.
Our reading starting with Cosmos from Cal Sagan was complex but intriguing. it kept my attention as a reader. Throughout the chapter a person can understand the advancement of science and how it began with questioning, observing and experimenting. Sometimes problem solving can be done through trial and error, it takes perseverance, student need to try a variety of different methods and strategies to find a solution. I want my students to discover math and as they deepen their understanding they can see the patterns in math and built upon it. Our students need to feel free and question math through experimentation and not just memorizing facts. Our students need to reason and think critically to be able to argue their position.
The readings that were done were insightful. One of the articles called Culturally Responsive Differentiated Instruction I felt was one that rang loud. The school I teach has a large population of Latino students it is important that I learn more about their culture. Understanding the demographics their values and culture is important, I need to know how this group will see what I teach in their everyday life. The examples that I used need to be something they can relate to and that they will be able to see this in their everyday life. Otherwise the student will see no value of what they are learning. Students need to see education is to prepare them for the outside world and as educators we want to prepare them for their future because we care, we want them to excel and reach their highest potential. We need to be able to help them have dreams, expose the opportunities that are out there in the world. Then they will take the next step and dream even further.
Lastly the article from, Teaching that Sticks by Heath, C, & Heath is important because I want my students to build upon their learning. Therefore when starting a lesson I need to have a good hook and make sure by students have time to ponder and question. I need them to be critical thinkers and being able to write or verbally express their ideas. In doing so we will first start out in small group and slowly move into partner projects. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and do mini presentation. I want to empower my students. I know at the beginning it will be challenging but I know if given the right amount of support my student can soar in their leaning.
In closing I am looking forward to transforming my classroom to a dynamic place of learning. My students will be able to understand how to apply their leaning in their everyday life. They will become confident individuals that are ready to take it one step higher and learn.
