My ImagineIT Project will be implemented at Luther Burbank Elementary in my 6th grade bilingual classroom. My students are diverse learners. I teach Language Arts and Math for blocks of sixty minutes periods. My focused classroom will be my homeroom where I will be teaching 6th grade math.
My big idea that I will implement in my classroom is number sense. My goal is that during this school year my students will have a deeper sense of what a number means, understand their relationship to one another and is able to perform mental math, understand symbolic representation in math, and be able to transfer that information into real world situation.
My bilingual classroom is comprise of usually audio, visual and kinesthetic learners I believe the big idea that will be implemented will assist students with their learning. My students are diverse learners so I will be implementing multi modality activities and investigation to deepen my students’ understanding of mathematics. Students will showcase their work and explore math in a different way, instead of just paper and pencil , in doing so the goal is that students will become more reflective learners. Deepening their comprehension of the number theory and the importance of logical thinking, students will be able to see patterns in math. Since 6th grade is the foundation for algebra we will be using theoretical knowledge coupling it with hands on approach to problem solving giving students a lasting understanding of how to approach mathematical problems critically.
Items that we will be using in the classroom will be “World of Wonder” students making daily presentation as well as having students create Prezi presentation and video clips. During this time students will be partner and expected to share how they saw math in their everyday life. As we go deeper through the year students will be ask to present a given concept that we are currently studying. Skits to demonstrate their understanding of math concepts. Math talk that students will be able to articulate and defend their ideas or thought process with their peers and support one another by clearing up any misconception in a non threatening environment. Student will arrive to their conclusion through estimation, deductive reasoning, and trial and error. A variety of math projects will be use to demonstrate student learning, from collages to mini books to video tape explanation and presentation. Produce products with an explanation of their mathematical reasoning. Hands on activities by using a bags of skittles to create a graph to finding the ratio and percentage of a specific color of skittle in the classroom, to finding your pulse.
Deepening their understanding of number sense students will be able to transfer their knowledge and be able to apply it to real-world situation. Students will feel more empowered to understand the world around them to questions and take one step forward to deepen their understanding built upon their knowledge and cultivate their relevance in math. Students lesson will be scaffold and will learn through activities and real-life application throughout the year. Video and clips that are produced will be use as a review for the end of the year testing.
