Our class has come a long way and we are moving forward into new and exciting waters. After having a discussion with a selective group of students they felt as though they did not know enough of how to create video clips or how it could be used as an effective learning tool. They were reluctant to see themselves on a video afraid of negative comment from their peers’. The Tech ninja have been a great help they allowed my students to be more comfortable with the technology. They have taken their time away from recess a few times a week to show my small group of students.
I spent a couple of sessions and had the students look at student products and had them comment what they like about the clips and what they would do differently. We reviewed several video and explain that if they took the time we could publish their videos on our website as a learning tool for the class or even as a review session for themselves. At first my students were very apprehensive but they seem to feel more confident as we go along. Creating final product has taken longer than expected but the students are excited about what they have so far.
My colleagues have been very supportive and although we are going through another round of testing we have been able to incorporate some of the other activities such as playing charades with vocabulary terms for reading and in math. Students are illustrating or using words in context instead of memorizing definitions. We revisit old and new ideas and allow the students time to see the big picture and how everything we do is interconnected. Recently I was reviewing mean, medium, mode and it was a relief to know that students were already calculating data in science and so these terms in math had so much more meaning. I did reach out to the science teacher so I could reiterate some of the math skills and although I will not jump into that unit we can definitely have a discussion of how the math and science are interconnected.
As students are able to see students’ work posted on our website I believe others will be encourage to participate and show their talents. My students are exciting about the activities we are able to do in class and are looking forward to see some of the upcoming project they will be able to participate in. This will be an exciting and fun time that students will have the opportunity to explore something new.
